Saithe fish. Despite the lower cost compared to cod, saithe has no less useful qualities.

Many have heard about such a breed of fish as saithe, but not many will say in what waters it lives and what value it has for the body, as well as in the food industry. This is what will be discussed in this article.

Sayda - habitat

One of the most valuable breeds industrial fish is saithe. Due to the unusual, but pleasant taste, balanced composition and nutritional value, it is highly appreciated and enjoys well-deserved popularity among gourmets.

Sayda, as a bright representative of the carp family, lives in:

  1. waters of the North Atlantic. Its habitat ranges from the coast of Greenland to New York.
  2. In the waters of the northern coasts of Norway, as well as Iceland.

It is characterized by strong migration, which means that in the spring months its flocks actively move to the northern shores, and in autumn they return to the south. Industrial fishing and catching of this fish is carried out all year round, most often it comes to store shelves in one of three types:

  • fresh;
  • frozen;
  • lightly salted.

Nutritional value and benefits

According to its nutritional value, pollock is often equated with sturgeon, its meat is rich in:

  • vitamins B12, A, D and E;
  • selenium and potassium;
  • zinc and calcium;
  • phosphorus and magnesium;
  • other macro- and microelements useful for the body.

It is the rich composition of this fish that makes it an indispensable dietary product.

Saithe in its composition is also rich in protein content. Of particular value is not only meat, but also the fat of this fish, obtained from the liver. Its meat is shown to be introduced into the diet of the following categories of people:

  1. Little children.
  2. Elderly.
  3. Pregnant women.
  4. Nursing mothers.

This need is due to the high content of phosphorus in its composition, which is necessary for the formation of the skeleton, iodine, which acts as an active compound in the prevention of problems with the thyroid gland.

How to catch more fish?

I have been active fishing for quite some time and have found many ways to improve the bite. And here are the most effective ones:

  1. Cool activator. Attracts fish in cold and warm water with the help of pheromones included in the composition and stimulates their appetite. It is a pity that Rosprirodnadzor wants to ban its sale.
  2. More sensitive gear. Reviews and instructions for other types of gear you can find on the pages of my site.
  3. Lures using pheromones.

You can get the rest of the secrets of successful fishing for free by reading our other articles on the site.

With regard to the calorie content of saithe, the average figures per 100 gr. make up 92 kcal., the amount of proteins - 19.5 gr., fats - 0.9 gr. carbohydrates - 0. It is these indicators that make it an indispensable product in the diet, indicated for a young, growing or weakened body, as well as problems with the liver, musculoskeletal system and thyroid gland.

Application in cooking

Regardless of the age, size and weight of pollock, fish meat has a delicate texture and amazing taste, as well as a unique aroma. In terms of texture, the meat has a grayish tint, it is quite dense, but not coarse, and is marked by a sufficient percentage of fat and moisture.

Especially its taste qualities are revealed if you cook marinated fish, either by salting or steaming.

In Western European countries, canned fish called "sea salmon" is especially popular, they have a high nutritional value, excellent taste, while in terms of pricing they are cheaper than cod, not inferior to the latter in their nutritional characteristics and qualities.

For the preparation of fish dishes, it is recommended to choose a fresh-frozen fish carcass of medium size, dense and with a whole skin. When paired with vegetables like onions and carrots, cooked on a bed of bay leaves, you get the perfect flavor and aroma. As an option, you can add white wine during the cooking process, thereby revealing the aroma and taste of the fish dish in a new way. It is also prepared:

  • baking;
  • adding to fish;
  • in slightly salted form, its fillets are used on sandwiches.

For all its benefits, saithe also has contraindications for consumption. In this case, we are talking about individual intolerance or an allergy to:

  1. Fish.
  2. Seafood, in particular, on such a component as a calorifer.

It is also worth paying attention to the question of where exactly the fish was caught, because it has such a feature as the accumulation of mercury and other heavy metals in its body if it is bred or caught in polluted waters.

Summing up, one thing can be summarized: pollock is one of the most valuable fish species, an indispensable source of many vitamins, which has a beneficial effect on the body. And also this fish is a very refined fish delicacy.

The most valuable commercial fish with a pleasant and distinctive taste is valued by gourmets for its balanced composition and nutritional value. We offer to prepare delicious dishes from pollock fish according to the proposed recipes.

Saithe is a prominent representative of the cod family. This is a marine inhabitant, gathering in flocks for migration over long distances. Such movements are associated with the search for favorable conditions for spawning.

The appearance of the fish has characteristic features: an elongated body, 3 fins are located on top of the back, 2 more are located near the anus. On the sides of the body, the lateral line is well defined in the form of a light stripe. In adults, the lower jaw is slightly pushed forward.

The upper part of the body is painted in a dark color, and closer to the belly it turns into a silvery-white color. A distinctive feature of all codfish is a short, barely noticeable chin barbel. The size of the saithe can reach over one meter, while its weight will be 18 - 20 kg.

The spawning period begins in January and lasts until June, the fish chooses spawning grounds at a depth of up to 200 m. The most favorable places for spawning saithe are the southern regions. The optimum water temperature for spawning should not exceed 10 degrees. The bottom surface should have sufficiently soft ground.

On average, a sexually mature individual is capable of carrying about 4 million eggs, but there are specimens that give 5-8 million eggs. Saithe caviar belongs to the pelagic type, where small (1 mm in diameter) eggs float on the surface of the water and have a bright color. Eggs are low in protein.

2 weeks after spawning, the larvae hatch, their length is already 3.5 mm. Thanks to the sea current, hatched larvae are carried over long distances of hundreds of kilometers, which explains their wide distribution. So representatives of the cod family can be found near the Russian coasts.

The main food for fry is the eggs of other fish species and small crustaceans. When the younger generation grows up a little, various small fish will appear in their diet.

When is the best time to catch saithe?

Saithe is especially attractive to the fisherman, as it can be hunted all year round. In winter, fishing from the shore is ineffective, given that the fish sink to a depth, but at the same time its activity does not decrease at all. During the colder months it is advisable to fish from a boat.

The fishing season from the shore begins in March, the coveted trophy goes hunting for coastal invertebrates and fish. The maximum activity of the predator is manifested in August - September, and closer to November, bites noticeably worsen.

Saithe is quite dependent on the tides. To fish for such a predator, it is recommended to acquire a special tide table for the current year in a particular region, it can either be downloaded from an Internet resource or purchased at a fishing store.

According to the information about the time of the tide, it is necessary to plan your hunting trip, it is desirable that the fishing starts even 2 hours before the specified time. It is this time period that is the best time for catching saithe. After the tide has passed, and it is time for the ebb, the intensity of biting gradually decreases.

You can count on a qualitative and quantitative catch at early dawn and at night.

In summer, the predator is caught in the White, Okhotsk, and in the Baltic and Barents Seas. This is due to the return of the main flocks of large individuals after spawning. It is recommended to choose promising places for fishing near the coastal zone, at the transitions of the rocky bottom to the sandy bottom.

The winter hunting season begins with the establishment of real ice and lasts until the middle of winter. After that, the fish goes to spawn, only fry remain.

What tackle is needed on the side?

Large pollock is a fairly strong fish that provides powerful and stubborn resistance when playing.

The key to a successful hunt for a predator is properly prepared gear:

  • The rod must be of good quality., with a good margin of safety and test load up to 300 g, tool length 240 cm.
  • Multiplier coil model with a capacity of 400 m of cord. To simplify the process of fighting, it is advisable to purchase a reel with a large gear ratio (6 - 7).
  • Braided fishing line with a breaking load of 40 kg is perfect for such purposes.

If fishing involves the use of a streamer, you must choose a class 14 fly rod.

Among the traditional gear for a marine predator, a bottom fishing rod, a sheer lure method, and spinning are distinguished.

As a bottom fishing rod, the usual version of the sea bottom is used. For equipment, high-quality fishing thread and stainless steel hooks are suitable.

The high efficiency of sheer glittering has been proven by practice. For equipment, a fishing thread with a cross section of up to 0.4 mm is used. As a catchy bait, a spinner is either white or bright in color. The optimal hook size is 25 - 30.

It is especially good to hunt lure during high tide, the bait is actively carried out in a horizontal direction with an amplitude of 1 m.

Sea spinning is fished from a swimming facility at a depth of 100 - 200 m. This way you can catch a large area where pollock lives, in particular, bottom elevations. Here, the fisherman will need certain knowledge and experience.

How to catch more fish?

I have been active fishing for quite some time and have found many ways to improve the bite. And here are the most effective ones:

  1. . Attracts fish in cold and warm water with the help of pheromones included in the composition and stimulates their appetite. It is a pity that Rosprirodnadzor wants to ban its sale.

Features of fishing

Saida, although it sticks to the bottom, it can take bait not only from the depth, but also on the surface. Cutting is recommended to be done confidently and quickly. To prevent the predator from getting off the hook, you must use quality and durable gear.

When fighting, the predator tries to free itself from the hook by making circular movements, and such actions contribute to the breakage of the tackle. There is a high probability of spoiling the tackle in the winter, when the fishing thread is rubbed against the ice.

Saithe fish - reviews of fishermen

In the vastness of Internet resources, in particular on fishing forums, you can find a sufficient amount of information about catching saithe, about its behavioral characteristics, and about catchy baits.

Based on numerous fan reviews, we can conclude that pollock is indeed an interesting and desirable trophy for every fisherman. As an object of fishing, the fish attracts with its disposition, caution and powerful resistance when playing.

The main thing, according to experienced spinningists, is to take with you on a hunt extremely durable gear, otherwise you can be left not only without a catch, but also without your favorite rod.

From it, on average, after 14 days, small larvae appear, 3 mm in size. Since they move freely with the current, they can be observed far from the spawning grounds.

As already mentioned, the growing fry eat fish eggs, plankton and crustaceans. Their location is the coastal zone of the seas. With the approaching winter cold, pollock fish goes to the depths and remains there until the onset of spring heat. The saithe lives for about 20-25 years. There were cases when this lived up to 30 years.
